A Message from the ATP/ATS Exam Revision Committee
Chair
As you know, RESNA SIGs have been encouraged to contribute to the
credentialing process by submitting exam items to be considered for inclusion
in the APT/ATS exam. As a first step towards achieving this initiative, we plan
to tap the expertise of some SIG members in a work group commissioned to revise
the current exam. I am writing to encourage you to volunteer yourself and/or
recommend members of your group who can be considered for involvement in this
process.
The ATP/ATS exam is approximately ten years old. During the past decade, the
exam has undergone reviews and updates. Currently, RESNA partners with Castle
Worldwide, Inc. for support and maintenance of the exam. This spring, a Castle
consultant will work with an Exam Revision Committee to write, screen, and
revise test questions. We are now recruiting individuals who represent a cross
section of content expertise to serve on the committee.
I ask that you review the attached invitation to participate on the Exam
Revision Committee. Consider nominating yourself and/or suggesting other
individuals who can be contacted. Note the specific criteria for committee
eligibility. Final selection will be based on establishing a small working
group with a broad base of expertise in the field the ultimate
interdisciplinary team!
Castle has established an ambitious timeline. With spring only a hop away,
committee appointments will be made imminently. I look forward to hearing from
you soon with nominations for the Exam Revision Committee. Please don't
hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

FAQs to get you started......
- I don't know anything about the ATP/ATS exam. Where can I get
information?
- An in-depth section of information about the credentialing process is
posted on the RESNA website. The exam purpose, background, outline, and sample
questions are provided. You are encouraged to contact Tonya Vaughn at the RESNA
office with specific questions about the credentialing process or exam.
- What's in it for me?
- Participating in the exam revision process will offer an opportunity to
contribute your knowledge and experience to the field of assistive technology
and ultimately the consumers served by credentialed providers. Work with the
test development consultant and other committee members will afford you a
unique learning experience. Your part in the process might even look good on
your vita!
- What's in it for my SIG?
- Committee members will work closely with a professional test development
consultant. Your SIG with benefit from representation because your delegate can
help others in your group formulate and submit items to a database of test
questions. An experienced item writer should be an increasingly valuable asset
since each SIG may be expected to submit test items on an ongoing basis in the
future.
- How much time will this take?
- The Exam Revision Committee should complete their work this spring with a
culminating two-day workshop at the conclusion of the RESNA conference, thus it
is less than a six month commitment. A chart outlining a timeline and specific
details is attached. Basically, each individual will participate in a two-hour
training session delivered via teleconference, complete an item-writing
assignment, and attend the two-day workshop. Every effort will be made to
remain sensitive to committee members' busy schedules and other obligations.
- Will I receive compensation for my time?
- Participation on the Exam Revision Committee is on a volunteer basis.
Committee members will be reimbursed for expenses (food and lodging) during the
two-day workshop following the RESNA conference.
- Where do I send my suggestions for committee members?
- Contact Christine Appert by e-mail at chrisa@virginia.edu to volunteer yourself
or suggest potential committee members.
