RESNA 2003
SIG-11 Business Meeting Minutes

Saturday, June 21st

  1. Minutes from last year (2002) posted on SIG-11 website

Give input to Ron Kocsis or Kirk Siqveland (new co-chairs)
    Ron - otron@netzero.net
    Kirk - kirk@minomech.com

  2. Andy Lin discussed the vitality of SIGs. There has been a concern over the years concerning the health of SIGs.

Board has proposed a 4 - 6 week SIG program proposal.

Andy passed out the proposal and will be having a teleconference to review the feedback.

Needs to be more mentoring available.

Program proposal is mandatory, not an option. If it is not implemented, the SIG will not exist. There needs to be more involvement from the SIGs overall.

SIG "scorecard": Please read the document and provide comments. Kirk requested that we send our emails to him or Ron, and they will submit a response during the teleconference.

Ron noted that lower right front page should be no problem for SIG-11.

Ron mentioned that they would keep everyone up-to-date regarding information received from the teleconference.

Kirk initiated discussion on a "how-to" for SIG chairs, etc. What would be good to be represented on the public side of the website, and on the private side of the website (membership).

Topic of the week was brought up as a possibility.

Review of a software program can be done on a regular basis and stored and archived.

    Ray Grott - Incorporating pictures

Trace Center will make accommodations for size of SIG-11 website, and expand its allocated space as required.

Wikiwikiweb technology was discussed by Kirk. It is a web-based technology where a moderator has control of the posting of messages, changes, and backup. (See: http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?WikiWikiWeb)

Denis will put a link in the Members Only page on RESNA's website.

Other ideas included creating a database of software and hardware reviews and personal opinions. Denis and Kirk are leading this effort.

SparrowWeb is a Web-based, template-driven system that simplifies Web-based collaboration by allowing all members of a group to create and edit Web pages, even if they lack HTML skills. (See: http://www2.parc.com/istl/projects/sparrow/)

  3. Ray Grott commented that SIGs need to publish practical content. Andy is leading discussion about head-pointing devices. Interactive discussion. Maximizing speech recognition by Ray and Paul. More interactive between presenter and audience. Paper submissions: numbers can be better. What do we want to talk about at the next conference? Who will take charge at the next conference? at the next show and tell? Come up with two or three topics. SIG chair and co-chairs responsible for making it happen. Kirk

Denis - onscreen keyboards vs. Morse code (research paper)

Using Morse code for DD young - environmental control (Denis)

Kirk, Topic - Computer as an access device - environmental, cognitive prosthesis.

Jim Lenker commented that anyone can contribute a research article, paper, or presentation.

Training strategies used for access techniques (Morse code, speech, etc.) Kevin Caves

Scanning (OCR textbooks) - Gary C.

Ray commented that he has not seen many pediatric computer applications. He would like to see more pediatric applications including elementary access and long-term implementation.

Dave documented computer use and computer-based work in DD adults.

Jim Lenker suggested identifying presentations for RESNA to put on the road for those who cannot come to the conference.

Denis commented that RESNA could sponsor online CEUs for those who cannot travel, have financial issues, or lack of suitable accommodations. There was a request to Jim to bring this issue to the Board.

Mistake on agenda - Developers Forum is in this room. Kirk noted vice-chairs' hard work.

SIG chair mentoring - address how to work - not enough time to discuss how to work.

Vice chair puts together Developer Forum - who do you want to see in next year's forum?

Jim noted that a posting should be made. Dave has a list of members, post minutes, request for any individuals who would like to assist. Andy requested to stay involved with the SIG in support of the SIG-Chairs and mentoring.

New Vice-chair is:
