Geriatric Puppy Bot From: Servo - 02/2017 - page 9 In November 2015, toymaker Hasbro decided to expand into the over-thehill market with its "Joy for All" Companion Cat bot. Apparently, the ersatz kitty caught on quickly with both oldsters and caregivers, as it inspired Today's Caregiver magazine to award Hasbro its 2016 Caregiver Friendly Award. Naturally, this generated considerable grousing on the part of dog-loving golden agers, so the company has now responded with its new Companion Pet Pup. According to Hasbro, “With BarkBack technology and a soft built-in heartbeat, the Joy for All Companion Pet Pup is a lifelike pet alternative. It looks, sounds, and feels like a real dog; when the pup’s “owner” speaks, it looks toward him/her and reacts with realistic puppy sounds.” Using its built-in sensors and speakers, the bowwow bet will nuzzle its owner's hand, woof when it hears someone talk to it, and move its head when petted. If grandpa happens to nod off, it will do the same. For some unknown reason, Pet Pup costs more than Companion Cat ($119.99 vs. $99.99) but, on the bright side, no one has to walk it, and it will never chew up grandpa’s shoes or drink out of the toilet.
