The Phantom Limb: A Video Game-Inspired Prosthetic Arm From: ECN - 10/19/2016 The Alternative Limb Project has created a tech-infused, game-inspired prosthetic called The Phantom Limb. Game titan Konami approached The Alternative Limb Project to create a prosthetic arm for amputee gamer James Young. This artificial limb was specifically inspired by the highly popular video game, Metal Gear Solid. The hand itself was 3D printed by the company, Open Bionics. It receives signals from electrodes in the leather harness that securely straps the prosthetic to the body. This communication between the leather strap and mechanical hand enables gestures and varying grip positions to be formed by buttons located on the forearm. The full list of hand positions are as follows: a thumps up, open palm, pointing, tripod, pinching, and a closed fist.
