Deep Learning Reinvents the Hearing Aid From: IEEE Spectrum - 12/06/2016 By: Deliang Wang Finally, wearers of hearing aids can pick out a voice in a crowded room Fewer than 25 percent of people who need a hearing aid actually use one. Why? Try as they might, makers of these devices have been unable to solve the so-called cocktail party problem. That is, until now. Decades after hearing aid wearers first complained that these electronic gadgets were unable to distinguish between, say, a voice and the sound of a passing car, researchers are applying machine learning based on deep neural networks to the task of segregating sounds. The result: a digital filter that reliably isolates speech from background noise.
