IBM & Medtronic Tech Could Alert Diabetics 3 Hours Before Hypoglycemic Attack From: Medical Design Technology - 01/09/2016 By: Sam Brusco You might remember a research partnership announcement made in April, detailing that Medtronic and IBM Watson Health had joined forces to enhance diabetes treatment. There hadn’t been too much other news on that front until IBM CEO Ginni Rometty’s CES 2016 keynote speech, when she revealed that IBM and Medtronic are developing an alert system for diabetics at risk of hypoglycemic events—hours before they occur. According to Rometty, the early warning alarm would become a part of Medtronic’s CareLink platform. The updated functionality is slated to be available in summer of this year, according to an interview with IBM Watson VP Kathleen McGroddy-Goetz. This decision is based on research involving 2,000 CareLink users, 600 of whom suffered hypoglycemic attacks and provided data in order to analyze patterns.
