Zap Your Tongue, and Fix Your Brain! From: Medical Design Technology - 06/03/2015 Helius Medical has spent many years developing the noninvasive Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator, PoNS for short, aptly named after a section of the brainstem. PoNS is the latest evolution of the “Tongue display unit” meant to communicate sensory information to the brain through the tongue. It then became the “brainport balance device,” which sent information through the tongue to replace vestibular signal lost through disease or trauma. A researcher then discovered that neurostimulation via the tongue, combined with exercises to overcome neurological deficits as a result of disease or trauma, was able to challenge the brain into reorganizing its function to accomplish movement that had been disturbed.
