Self-Lacing Shoe Setbacks Taken in Stride From: Product Design & Development - 04/20/2015 When Frederick Labbe was a mechanical engineering student in 2001, he came up with the idea of using weight as an energy source to lace shoes. Five years later he developed a working prototype of the Powerlace auto-lacing system.
