Self-Lacing Shoe Setbacks Taken in Stride

When Frederick Labbe was a mechanical engineering student in 2001, he came up
with the idea of using weight as an energy source to lace shoes. Five years
later he developed a working prototype of the Powerlace auto-lacing system.

The designers hope that someday the product will be able to help people who
suffer from physical disabilities, such as arthritis and back pain.
