How to Build an Artificial [Prosthetic] Eye From: Medical Design Technology - 07/07/2015 By: Sam Brusco There are often misconceptions revolving around "glass eyes," in that they seem obviously artificial, and frankly, just a bit creepy. However, a team at Moorfields Eye Hospital shatters the glass eye stigma, using advanced materials and artistry to craft about 1,400 fully customized, detailed artificial eyes every year. These are typically engineered to replace the eyes of those who have lost one or both eyes as a result of disease or accidents. To craft the eyes, first an impression of the eye socket it made, iris diameter is measured and color is customized, and an intricate process of wax carving takes place in order to shape the eye so it fits seamlessly into the socket. Definitely take a look at the video to get an idea of the fabrication process for an artificial eye.
