A healthcare professional must provide a qualified interpreter if an interpreter is necessary to ensure effective communication between the Deaf and the healthcare professional, and the Deaf patient has requested an interpreter. There are only a few exceptions to the rule. However, in the current healthcare environment, providers are asked to do more with less.
