App improves the safety of blind pedestrians in cities

In future, the blind and visually impaired will be able to make their way
through city traffic more safely with the aid of smartphones: An accessible
app and an online route planner have been especially developed to provide the
blind and visually impaired with prepared navigation data. Acoustic and
vibration signals guide them through the traffic. Siemens and its research
partners have developed and tested the prototype over the past three years as
part of the project named "Inner-city mobility support for the blind and
visually impaired."
