MedTech Memoirs: Artificial Limbs From: Medical Design Technology - 04/22/2015 Believe it or not, the earliest recorded use of an artificial limb dates back to the book of Vedas from Sanksrit, India, believed to have been written between 3,500 and 1,800 BCE. It describes Queen Vishpla, an Indian warrior queen, who lost one of her legs during a battle with a neighboring territory. After having healed, she was fitted with an iron leg to return to the battlefield. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a discovery of the leg, or any like it, in that part of the world.
