Smart glasses could help visually impaired From: Evaluation Engineering - 06/19/2014 By: Rick Nelson Researchers at Oxford University's Department of Clinical Neuroscience, with the assistance of National Instruments LabVIEW software, have developed prototype LED glasses to help the visually impaired. The prototype can work for people with some residual vision. "We acquire video feeds from head-mounted cameras, and process the image data to detect nearby objects of interest such as people, sign posts, or obstacles to navigate," write Oxford researchers Stephen Hicks and Luis Moreno in a case study. "The detected objects are simplified and displayed back to the user via banks of LEDs attached to a head mounted display. Using a small number of LEDs we can indicate the position and class of the object in the immediate vicinity of the person wearing the device."
