BrainGate: A Breakthrough Study for Healthcare Robotics From: Robotics Trends - 12/26/2012 Quadriplegic's brain reconnects with a long-lost ability: to reach, to grasp and to lift with robotic limb Cathy Hutchinson is a quadriplegic patient who is able - for the first time in fifteen years - to reach and grasp with a robotic limb linked to tiny sensor in her brain. As reported in a recent study in the journal Nature, the device, called BrainGate, bypasses the nerve circuits broken by the brainstem stroke and replaces them with wires that run outside Hutchinson's body. "The implanted sensor is about the size of a baby aspirin."
