Wang Three Arizonans braved the choppy currents and frigid waters of San Francisco Bay on Sunday to become the first blind swimmers to complete the Alcatraz Invitational. The swimmers were Max Ashton, 17, a senior at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix; Katie Cuppy, 19, a freshman at Northern Arizona University; and Tanner Robinson, 25, a recent graduate of Arizona State University. Each flanked by guide swimmers who served as human “bumpers,” the three leapt off a boat near Alcatraz Island at about 9 a.m. Sunday and swam the 1 1/2 miles to the foot of the Hyde Street Pier, which took about an hour.
