Australians implant 'world first' bionic eye

Australian scientists said Thursday they had successfully implanted a "world
first" bionic eye prototype, describing it as a major breakthrough for the
visually impaired.  

Bionic Vision Australia (BVA), a government-funded science consortium, said
it had surgically installed an "early prototype" robotic eye in a woman with
hereditary sight loss caused by degenerative retinitis pigmentosa.

Bionic Eye Reawakens Blind Woman’s Optic Nerve

Prosthetic prototype is the first step towards proving the viability of more
advanced implants 

An Australian woman has partially regained her sight thanks to a prototype
bionic eye scientists have developed. 

Bionic Vision Australia developed the bionic eye, which is equipped with 24
electrodes with a small wire that extends from the back of the eye, to a
receptor attached behind the ear.
