Virtual Tech Makes Recovery a Reality at Walter Reed From: US Army - 10/19/2009 By: Elizabeth Lockwood Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment, or CAREN, is a new therapeutic technology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington. CAREN is a revolutionary tool that provides therapists the ability to tailor its use to meet a patient's specific needs. Chiefly comprised of a large, tilting motion platform embedded with a treadmill, CAREN looks like a pedestal of honor. Standing on the platform and secured by a harness, a patient faces a single, curved screen that immerses him or her in the action of a virtual world. CAREN is a versatile, multi sensory system for diagnostic, rehabilitation, evaluation and registration of the human balance system. The system works in real-time and enables the creation of a variety of experiments in a controlled and repeatable environment by using different virtual reality principals. CAREN enables researchers to analyze balance behavior, latency, response times and the relations between different sensory inputs that affect human decision protocols, human balance, posture and locomotion behaviors.
