A new lens technology from a UK-based developer will help bring glasses to the developing world. Adlens, a UK-based developer of adaptive lens technology, is working to develop robust and affordable glasses to meet the needs of the more than 1.3 billion people globally who could benefit from a simple pair of spectacles. The new lens technology features oil housed between a flexible membrane and rigid polycarbonate lenses. Two adjusters on the sides of the glasses are used to change the power of each lens, which allows users to dial up a customized prescription with no help from an eye care professional. Once the user has set their prescription, the lenses are sealed and the adjusters can be broken off. Each part of the glasses – lenses, adjusters, and frame – is designed to cope with harsh conditions in the developing world.
