Innovations 2009 - The future is now A better artificial hand From: USA Weekend - 01/11/2009 By: Reed Karaim For amputees who've lost a hand to war, accident or disease, prosthetic devices have fallen far short of the capability of human fingers, allowing only a simple pincerlike action. That was until Touch Bionics, a Scottish company, developed the i-LIMB hand. Each finger is individually powered to let wearers grasp a plate, turn a key in a lock and use the index finger to operate an ATM keypad. The i-LIMB costs double or triple that of other prosthetics, but at the end of 2008, Touch Bionics launched a program to help eligible US candidates qualify for insurance or government reimbursement.
