2009 NCTI Technology in the Works Awardees Five exceptional teams of researchers and vendors have been selected to examine the impact of innovative assistive technologies for students with special needs. NCTI sponsors this annual competition to inform the development of learning and assistive technologies that can improve educational results for all students, particularly those with disabilities. We are especially pleased to be able to welcome promising graduate students among the winning teams. Each $15,000 award requires matching funds and requires teams to conduct and report rapid research. This year’s winners represent a wide spectrum of research interests from spellcheckers for individuals with learning disabilities to web browsers for blind students. The distinguished 2009 winners will examine: Accuracy of Commercial Spellcheckers for Individuals with Disabilities (The Accuracy of Spell Checkers Designed for Persons with Learning Disabilities) http://www.nationaltechcenter.org/Uploads/2009/05/ginger-software-ncti-abstract.pdf Affordable, Mobile Technologies as Learning Tools for Students with Disadvantages (Touching the Future with a Spark: How iPod Touches and Studywiz Spark Facilitate the Learning of At-Risk Students) http://www.nationaltechcenter.org/Uploads/2009/05/southgate_ncti_proposal-21.pdf Differentiated Instruction Through the Use of Stages Software (Developing Number Sense) http://www.nationaltechcenter.org/Uploads/2009/05/abstract1.pdf Hands-Free Interaction with Computers (Look Mom, No Hands: The NIA as an Alternative Computer Interface) http://www.nationaltechcenter.org/Uploads/2009/05/ncti-proposal_wsu_flach_bat_junker-21.pdf Web Browsing Made Accessible for Blind Students (Enabling More Effective Use of the Web Anywhere with WebAnywhere and TrailBlazer) http://www.nationaltechcenter.org/Uploads/2009/05/proposal-31.pdf Findings from each team will be presented at the 2009 Technology Innovators Conference in Washington, DC, November 16-17, 2009 at The Madison Hotel.
