Great advances have been made in hearing aids, but what about aids for the
totally deaf? Deaf people communicate with hearing people mainly through
human interpreters. Despite the central role that sound - and deafness - have
played in the rich history of electrical engineering, advances in electronic
interpreters have been rare.
