Engineers and scientists at Cyberkinetics are developing electronic systems
  to bring a measure of freedom to patients "locked in" by injury or illness.

Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems, a Massachusetts startup, has earmarked
those with severe paralysis as its target population for electronic devices
designed to accomplish what some might say is impossible. Its implanted
Andara Oscillating Field Stimulator (OFS) System promotes tissue growth in
the vicinity of a spinal injury, thereby restoring some sensation and
movement.
