Freeware / shareware Ramon Castillo - 12/21/2005 I thought we should start a thread about shareware and freeware programs with reviews and comments. --- Ramon Castillo - 12/21/2005 As-U-Type - $39 - http://www.asutype.com/ Auto correct on steroids. Abbreviation expansion Works at the OS level and is available to all applications --- Ramon Castillo - 12/21/2005 Opera Web Browser - Free http://www.opera.com/ Comprehensive keyboard access Speech input Text-to-speech Zoom feature magnifies entire page, not just text Highly customizable with most features included "right out the box" Compatible with all (?) but ActiveX enabled sites --- Colin Johanson - 12/21/2005 Irfan View - http://www.irfanview.com Freeware graphics viewer, editor and thumbnail webpage creator. It is small, fast to download, installs politely (asking which file formats to display, not just stealing everything and resetable). Fastest loading and very functional photo viewer or editor on the market and the price can not be beaten. --- Phillip A. Goodman - 12/22/2005 FileSync - http://www.fileware.com/download.htm I know this isn't strictly a program to help with computer use in the way we usually think of it saves ME a lot of time. Between the desktop computer at home, the desktop at work, the laptop, AND the extremely useful USB drive one could spend a lot of time transferring files for work. A freeware utility called FileSync helps me quickly determine which files in any given folder or drive aren't transferred or synced and lets me choose which ones to transfer. CruzerLock 2 (by Encryptyx http://www.encryptx.com ) I also wanted to mention that the last Scandisk USB drive I purchased came with this freeware encryption program. This takes some of the worry about breeching client confidentiality should one lose their laptop or USB drive. --- Dave Jaffe - 12/22/2005 Mark Novak asked me to remind folks of the extensive shareware/freeware resources available on the Trace website: Designing More Usable Computers and Software http://trace.wisc.edu/world/computer_access/ Apple Macintosh Software Toolkit http://trace.wisc.edu/world/computer_access/mac/macshare.html DOS Software Toolkit http://trace.wisc.edu/world/computer_access/dos/ Microsoft Windows Software Toolkit http://trace.wisc.edu/world/computer_access/win/winshare.html Windows 95 Software Toolkit http://trace.wisc.edu/world/computer_access/win95/win95sha.html Linux Accessibility Resource Site (very extensive and updated) http://larswiki.atrc.utoronto.ca/wiki/Software
