Software Lets Programmers Code Hands-Free From: New Scientist - 04/26/2006 By: Duncan Graham-Rowe New speech recognition software called VoiceCode could greatly ease the plight of the some 22 percent of all U.S. software programmers who suffer from repetitive strain injury. The tool automatically recognizes spoken syntax, converting it into correct code and eliminating the need to spell out every syntactic peculiarity as typical with most speech recognition software. The project is a joint collaboration between National Research Council of Canada researcher Alain Desilets, Harvard University's David Fox, and the University of California at Berkeley's Stuart Norton. Desilets says the software enables programmers to dictate code more naturally, and can quickly interpret spoken programming syntax. VoiceCode currently works only with Python, but Desilets says it can be adapted for use with other languages. Desilets presented the program at ACM's CHI2006 conference held in Montreal last week.
