The Singapore Therapeutic, Assistive & Rehabilitative Technologies (START) Centre (http://www.start-centre.com) will be organizing the Assistive & Rehabilitative Technology Symposium (ARTS) at the Global Entrepolis @ Singapore (GES) on 1 November 2006, in Singapore. START Centre is one of the EDB’s Locally-based Enterprise Advancement Program (LEAP) partner. The main theme for this year ARTS will be: "Towards Inclusive Society in Asia: Policy or Technology?" ARTS is part of the Global Entrepolis @ Singapore (GES) event; GES is a mega international event run by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), aiming to be the global marketplace for the exchange of funds, enterprise, innovation, and technology. This year ARTS will focus on topics such as Assistive & Rehabilitation Technology (ART), Practice and Policy, Technology Transfer, Wheeled Mobility and Seating, Assistive Robotics & Mechantronics, Cognitive Disabilities, Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC), Dysphasia, Sensory Loss, Environmental Control, and Computer Access. It aims to promote research, development, education, advocacy, and provision of technology, that will improve the potential of people with disabilities and the geriatric population through the use of technology; to support the professionals engaged in these activities; to promote Singapore as an ART hub; to support and create local rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology related industries; and to create a platform to interact with international and local experts in best practices in AT-related research, commercialization, and practices. The Guest of Honor for ARTS 2006 is Dr Amy KHOR, Mayor of South West District, Member of Parliament for the Republic of Singapore, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Environment & Water Resources, and Chairman of the Feedback Unit. Dr. KHOR will also be officially launching START Centre at ARTS 2006. Other distinguish speakers are senior governmental officials from Thailand and Singapore, veteran practitioners, and researchers.
