Engineers at the Naval Research Laboratory will soon begin clinical trials of a 3,200-pixel retinal implant that could restore moderate vision to certain blind patients. Today's state-of-the-art retinal prosthesis is a 16-pixel device that has been implanted in patients at the Doheny Eye Institute at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
