Telerehabilitation R&D: Where Should We Go from Here? From: National Rehabilitation Hospital - Research Update Fall 2002 - page 10 It is abundantly clear that for telerehabilitation practices to proliferate, professional and societal changes will be needed. Professional licensure and practice acts, the reimbursement policies of public and private payers, privacy regulations, and changes in the nation’s health care system will all influence the development of telerehabilitation. This article goes beyond those essential ingredients to suggest other ideas about future telerehabilitation research and development directions. These ideas are based on thoughts expressed during and since the "State of the Science Conference on Telerehabilitation and Applications of Virtual Reality," which was hosted in October 2001 by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) on Telerehabilitation. The author, Michael Rosen, PhD, is director of the RERC, which is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).
