Intel Teaches Computers to Lip-Read From: VNUNet - April 29, 2003 By: Anthony Dhanendran Intel's Audio Visual Speech Recognition software is an open-source speech recognition program that uses face detection algorithms from the company's OpenCV computer vision library to read lips in an effort to improve the accuracy of speech recognition programs. The software tracks mouth movements in a process similar to human lip reading, and was designed to boost the efficacy of voice-recognition systems in noisy environments. Intel's Justin Rattner, director of the company's Microprocessor Research Labs, says, "Intel wants to develop technology that allows computers to interact with the world the way humans do." http://vnunet.com/News/1140546
