Bush has proposed a New Freedom Initiative that focuses on improving assistive technology for the disabled in order to bring more of the disabled community into the work force. The initiative would triple funding for Rehabilitation Engineering Research Centers (RERCs), such as the Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan, North Carolina’s Duke University, and Northwestern University in Chicago, that receive federal funding through the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitative Research. http://www.rehabpub.com/ltrehab/892000/1.asp
