Carpal Tunnel Vision from ID Systems, October, 1997, page 10 Interval Research Corp., located in Palo Alto, California, was recently granted a patent for a device that can be surgically installed beneath a layer of skin; its liquid crystal display is close enough to the surface to be visible. According to a recent article in Business Week, the device contains a tiny control chip and is powered by an ultrasmall battery that can be recharged by holding the wrist near an external charger. Using the device would incur no health risks, said a researcher at Interval. Though the list of applications at present is not yet extensive, Interval notes that if biosensors were installed and connected to the device, it would be possible, for example, to monitor the body temperature and blood pressure of a patient with heart disease. More uses will probably emerge in time.
