Summer Intern Position Sun Microsystems Laboratories Chelmsford, MA The Speech Applications Group and Enabling Technologies project are seeking a graduate student in computer science or engineering to serve as a summer intern to investigate how to adapt Java user interfaces to increase access for users with disabilities. The work will involve identifying accessibility issues in Java, HTML and a web browser; proposing strategies to adress these issues; and creating a Java prototype that demonstrates one or more of these strategies. Experience with object-oriented programming and user-interface toolkits is required. Knowledge of and experience with HTML, web browser design, and technologies and design of user interfaces for people with disabilities are all pluses. Past interns have implemented new speech applications of their owndesign, helped deliver new product, explored X Windows access for userswho are blind, and have contributed to published research papers andusability testing efforts. The Speech Applications Group typically hosts two interns each summer, and occasionally an intern during the winter. These internships are paid positions, with the rate dependent on a candidates level of schooling.
