Book Announcement: Evaluating, Selecting, and Using Appropriate Assistive Technology edited by Jan C. Galvin & Marcia J. Scherer This book has been designed to lead the reader through the PROCESS of assistive technology evaluation and selection while underscoring the need for the entire process to be consumer-driven. Chapter 1 provides a model for service provision and outcomes assessment that emerged in part from the real-life experiences of people with disabilities as described in Scherer's book, Living in the State of Stuck: How Technology Impacts the Lives of People with Disabilities. Chapters 2-10 focus on the evaluation, selection and use of assistive technologies for various purposes and in a variety of contexts. The topics range from low tech aids for grooming to high tech devices for communication, from childhood to adulthood, from home to worksite, from basic activities of daily living to play and recreation. Chapters 11-13 discuss the topics of computer access and interactive technologies followed by a projection of the next generation of technologies. Chapters 14-16 broaden the discussion again to legislation and federal policy affecting the evaluation, selection, and procurement of all technologies and then on the means to obtain funding for them. The final chapter summarizes the current field of assistive technology devices and service delivery. Order directly from: Aspen Publishers, Inc.
