The following individuals have software that provide screen magnification in X Windows, which usually is run with UNIX. You should contact them directly or get the software and build it on your system. UnWindows V1.1 May 16, 1994 Richard L. Kline Ephraim P. Glinert Computer Science Department Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, NY 12180 e-mail: kliner@cs.rpi.edu ========================= What's New with UnWindows ========================= Dynamag V1.1 ------------ A new (third) magnification option has been added. Previously, when in 'mobile' mode, the magnification area was sticky to the mouse pointer, moving around with it. The "Follow" button now defaults to having the magnified image always appear in the stationary application window, while the area being magnified is still determined by the movement of the mouse pointer. The new mode is much more smooth in its operation than the original mobile mode (which has been retained), though it is no longer directly analogous to a real magnifying glass. A new button has been added to the settings window to allow the user to select between the two 'mobile' behaviors. While the new mode works properly under both X11R5 and OpenWindows, it has been discovered that the original 'mobile' mode does not work correctly when running under OpenWindows. We believe that the improved performance and smoothness of the new mode will be preferred by most users. The overall speed of response is noticeably improved when magnifying a large area. Coloreyes V1.1 -------------- Changes made to the settings window in V1.0 formerly would not take effect until they were saved and the program restarted. They now take effect as soon as the settings window is closed, without having to save them permanently (with the "Save settings" button). Actually, changes to the colors are made immediately; changes to the number of colors, and to the percentages associated with them, take effect when the "Done" button is pressed. In V1.0 the scrollbars did not always respond properly to the functions bound to the left and right mouse buttons. This has been fixed in V1.1. General Improvements -------------------- The font size used in UnWindows V1.0 was not available in OpenWindows. The size has been changed to one available both in X11R5 and OpenWindows. Coloreyes and dynamag have now been tested by the authors on a DEC 3000 (Alpha) workstation in addition to Sun SPARCstations running both SunOS/X11R5 and Solaris/OpenWindows. In general, the code has been made more X-compliant than it was in the earlier version. This should cut down on warnings and incompatibilities when compiling UnWindows on new platforms. A PostScript version and a plain-text version of the user's guide are now available in addition to the LaTeX source document. ======================= How to Obtain UnWindows ======================= To connect to the RPI CSLab anonymous FTP directory, ftp to 'ftp.cs.rpi.edu'. Login as 'anonymous', and type your e-mail address as a password (this is required). The file README lists each subdirectory and its general contents. UnWindows V1.1 is in the 'unwindows' subdirectory. If you are using gopher, connect to cs.rpi.edu, port 70, and select "RPI CSLab Anonymous FTP Server."
