Here at the Microcentre we developed a program called PAL (Predictive Adaptive Lexicon) which can reduce the number of keystrokes needed quite dramatically. The program starts out with a standard dictionary, ordered according to frequency use and then learns what words are used most frequently by the user (including new words). The top five words are presented in a menu based on the last key pressed. At present the program is in use in some Scottish schools for children with reading and writing difficulties and for people with dyslexia but can be of benefit to any one who has difficulty using the keyboard.
