National Symposium Educational Applications of Technology for Persons with Sensory Disabilities July 20-22, 1994 Hyatt Regency Rochester East Main Street Rochester, New York Symposium Objectives and Events ------------------------------- The upcoming National Symposium is intended to help focus attention on the role educational technologies should play throughout the 1990's and beyond in providing information and services to our nation's children, youth, and adults who have hearing or vision losses. It will concentrate on practical applications of technologies in a variety of educational settings and feature new developments together with innovative applications of some of the more enduring technologies. Distance Learning Options ------------------------- Four plenary sessions, 32 formal presentations and 31 poster sessions are scheduled. To date, we have over 135 individuals registered to attend. A comprehensive and diverse program is available for those who attend, and distance learning technologies will make it possible for those not able to attend the Symposium in Rochester to receive information presented at major events. We plan to use several distance learning alternatives as a means of bringing information presented at the symposium to those who are not able to travel to Rochester. After the Symposium, an evaluation of the success of the distance learning efforts will be conducted to determine if such applications should be incorporated in future meetings. We would like your comments and suggestions. Contact the National Symposium Office if you have any questions. Video Materials --------------- Satellite Broadcast of Major Events ----------------------------------- - All plenary speakers, and the opening and closing sessions will be videotaped and opened captioned. These tapes will be broadcast, via satellite, on the evenings of July 20, 21, and 22, 1994. The specific satellite information is presented in the following table. During the Symposium, this Internet account will be monitored by individuals in our "Resource Room" at the Hyatt Regency meeting area and we will be able to respond immediately to messages. - An electronic mailing list has been established so that persons with access to the Internet may receive symposium related documents. To join this list, send the following one-line message: SUBSCRIBE TECHSYM-L Firstname Lastname to the Internet address: LISTSERV@LISTSERVER.ISC.RIT.EDU Persons who subscribe to this mailing list will receive the Symposium Registration booklet, Abstracts of all Formal and Poster sessions, the Symposium Program booklet and text files of all four plenary presentations. Additional materials will be sent as the symposium progresses. Contact the Symposium Office if you have any questions about how to subscribe or use the mailing list. America Online -------------- - The National Symposium office has established an account on America Online and interested persons are invited to send messages related to the symposium to the following address: NTIDSYMPOS This account will be checked daily until the Symposium starts. During the Symposium, July 20-22, 1994, the NTIDSYMPOS account will be monitored all day and we will be able respond to individuals directing messages to the Symposium. - Symposium related documents will be placed in the disABILITIES Software Library for downloading by interested persons. Items to be placed in the Software Library include the Symposium Registration Booklet, Abstracts of all Formal and Poster sessions, the Symposium Program Booklet. To move to the disABILITIES area on America Online enter the Keyword "Deaf" or the Keyword "Blind". From the disABILITIES area you can open the message boards or software libraries. During the Symposium, the text files from all four plenary speakers captions will be added to the disABILITIES Software Library. Additional materials will be posted as the symposium progresses. Each file added to the disABILITIES Software Library will include NTIDSYMPOS in the title to help identify the file as related to the symposium. For example, the Abstracts file will be identified as "NTIDSYMPOS --ABSTRACTS". Additionally, a file will be posted in the disABILITIES Software Library that will be used to solicit input from America Online users to a "Recommendations" report that will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education. The purpose of this document will be to help identify areas for future research and development. - Discussion Folders entitled "NTID Tech Symposium" will be established by July 10, 1994 in both the Blindness Board and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Board message boards. - There may be "live" conferences during the symposium on America Online in the disABILITIES chat room. This will depend upon the interest of those using America Online. Check the "Technology Symposium" folder in the Blindness Board and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Board message boards. - Individuals wishing to obtain free software to peruse America Online should call 1-800-827-6364 and indicate extension promotion code 6751. Subject: Tech conference using tech to disseminate info From: NRCGSH@RITVAX.ISC.RIT.EDU (Prof Norm Coombs) Conferences dealing with computing and information technology have seldom taken the obvious step of using these technologies to expand the outreach of the conference. Now, the July Symposium on Technology and Sensory Disabilities will blaze a new trail by doing just that. The National Technical Institute for the Deaf is hosting this conference in Rochester NY July 20-22. The presentations at the conference will have real time captioning. The text from this process will be posted on the internet on the evening of the presentation. It's the next best thing to being there! To get on the mailing list to receive this conference while it is in progress, send mail to: listserv@listserver.isc.rit.edu with no subject line but with this one line of text: sub techsym-l (your name in quotes) Please feel free to start up any discussions or ask any questions regarding the symposium or related topics by posting to the TECHSYM- L@LISTSERVER.ISC.RIT.EDU address. My name is Cecelia Dorn and I'm the coordinator of the TECHSYM-L mailing list. The following list details the locations, times, and types of presentation, in addition to the titles and presentor names for the NTID National Symposium on Educational Applications of Technology for Persons with Sensory Disabilities to be held in Rochester, NY on July 20-22. You may also want to request our file that includes the above information plus an abstract of each presentation. To do so, send a message requesting the abstracts file (or just put SYMPOSIUM ABSTRACTS in the Subject line) to my e-mail address: CAD0410@ritvax.isc.rit.edu I've decided against posting this abstracts file directly to the list because it is approximately 1900 lines long (take this into account before requesting :-) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Cecelia A.
