NISH National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation & Design

The purpose of the NISH National Scholar Award for Workplace Innovation &
Design is to encourage college students to design creative technological
solutions to barriers that prevent people with disabilities from entering or
advancing in the workplace.

NISH will accept functioning prototypes or systems that create greater access
to employment for people with disabilities in these areas:

    Computer access
    Environmental accommodations
    Functional control and access
    Transportation/mobility
    Communication assistance

To ensure that these devices meet the workforce needs of people with
disabilities, devices must be developed in collaboration with a person with a
disability. Additionally, greater consideration will be given to those
applicants who have consulted with a NISH-affiliated NPA in the design
process. NISH can match students and universities with NPAs who are
interested in collaborating in the development of assistive technology
devices. NISH can also provide technical consultation to assist students in
the design process. Contact NISH at scholarship@nish.org for more information.

Any undergraduate or graduate level student or student team may submit a
design and discussion paper. Three awards are given annually:

    First place - $10,000
    Second place - $ 5,000
    Third place - $ 3,000

A matching prize will be awarded to the sponsoring department for each of the
design winners. If you are selected as one of the scholarship winners, a
representative from each award-winning team will be invited to attend a
NISH-sponsored conference held in the spring of 2007. This representative
will be expected to provide a poster display at the conference and give a
presentation on the device during a conference session.
