Rewired, amputee lifts arm with mind

All Jesse Sullivan needs to move his prosthetic arm is a vague wish. Thanks
to an extraordinary bit of human rewiring, Sullivan can bend his elbow,
scratch his head or lift a pencil without actively thinking about it. His
desires - even those that reside in the gray area between conscious and
unconscious thought - can make motors whir. In essence, Sullivan can operate
a machine with his mind. 

"He's using his brain to send a command signal to his prosthetic arm," said
Bill Hanson, president of Liberating Technologies Inc., the Holliston, Mass.,
company that made Sullivan's digital arm. "The challenge is to tell the arm
which motors it should run, and in which direction and how fast."
