The New Freedom Initiative's Online Resource for Americans with Disabilities

From: The Newsletter of Western Center for Microcomputers in Special
Education, Inc. - Fall 2003 - page 17

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with
Disabilities Act, a new web site was created to provide one-stop online
access to all government-related resources, services, and information related
to people with disabilities. The site, created by the Presidential Task Force
on Employment of Adults with Disabilities, can be found at
http://www.disAbility.gov The focus of the site is on government resources;
therefore, users will not be linked to the many other internet sites
providing disability resources. The advantage to this approach is absence of
advertisers; the disadvantage is a limited number of resources.

Nonetheless, the site does provide a wealth of information concerning
disability issues. Nine major categories are included: Employment, Education,
Housing, Health, Transportation, Income Support, Technology, Community Life,
Civil Rights.

Each of these topics offers resources and additional links. For example,
clicking on the Technology button leads to additional links for Accessibility
Assistive and Information Technology, Communication, Technology Rights, and
Disability Related Organizations, which, in turn, provide more specific links
within each category.
