Hi Folks...

Kevin's message prompted my memory about a proposal I've been thinking
about.
As many of you know...I ran a review course last year for the RET exam.
We didn't have a lot of folks this year so I kind of provided the
materials by email to the few folks who were planning on taking the exam.

I encourage all of you to consider obtaining the RET certification. It
looks like the way things are going, if we have any hope of maintaining
some semblance of rehab engineering/technology service provision,
certification will play an important role.

To this end I would like to make the review materials I've developed to
anyone who would like them at no cost. (If you copy them and sell
them...I expect my cut!) I'll send you the questions and problems and
make you sweat for a bit before I send you the answers and solutions.
The folks who took the review course found it useful preparation for the
exam.

If you're interested, please email and let me know.

Thanks!
Jerry

I took the review course that Jerry offered last year, and can say that it
was very helpful in preparing me for the types of questions asked on the
exam. Any exam that has multiple-choice questions where the testers are
looking for the "most correct" answer will have elements of subjectivity,
but Jerry's review helped me see what the testers were looking for.

Just thought I'd let you know in case you're on the fence. I agree with
Jerry that certification is what is most likely to get us recognized as
service providers, combined with the hard work that Greg, Kevin, and all the
others are doing with CPT codes.

Dear all.
I will be leaving Louisiana Tech in early April to take a position at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. I will be the founding Director of the new Center for Rehabilitation Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) that has been funded by a Coulter Foundation gift of $6.5M. I will be the Herman L. Shulman Chair Professor with tenure in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Clarkson.

I will remain 5/8ths time at the Shreveport. LA, VAMC for the present time, as I have some very exciting work ongoing there, with about 10 grad students who are in the midst of finishing MS or PhD theses or dissertations on the VA research data. It's going to make for an interesting biweekly commute for a while!

It is my hope to entice to come to Clarkson the best and brightest engineers and researchers who not only are strong in their own disciplines, but have a great interest in working at the cutting edge of rehabilitation research and application. We also wish to strengthen a bioengineering focus that has grown substantially within Clarkson over the past few years. As you will see below, The University has made a serious commitment to the Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering fields. I would hope to entice some of you to join me there!

To that end, Clarkson is currently in the midst of an ECE chair search. This is a great opportunity to bring someone in the bio/rehab or related area.  We are looking for a chair who is senior (full prof) and has an established research record.  The dean believes he has the funds to provide an
attractive salary, startup package and other negotiable items.  (There is
also over $1M in the Coulter gift specifically for ECE, not endowed.)  Now
is an unprecedented time to hire senior faculty who have excellent research

Clarkson is in an expansion mode and also has 4 to 6 addition openings in the engineering College. Many of these could be used to hire individuals with an interest in Rehabilitation or Bioengineering. My wish is to leverage these positions to build a world-class rehab engr, science and technology research and academic team. The general faculty ad is below.

The Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering at Clarkson University invites applications and nominations for three to six faculty positions available immediately. The objective of the search is the recruitment of current and future leaders in engineering research and education. The key qualifications of the successful candidates are demonstrated excellence in scholarship and a commitment to the education of graduate and undergraduate students. One position is the Herman L. Shulman Endowed Chair in Rehabilitation Engineering and Director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Program, and the others are tenure-track appointments, with rank and salary to be established commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate. The specific department in which the candidates will hold appointments is open, and joint appointments among departments are possible.
The Coulter School of Engineering currently consists of 66 faculty members plus support personnel. The School is home to four academic departments, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering, which offer curricula leading to seven baccalaureate degrees. Each department offers Ph.D., M.S., M. E., and B.S. degrees. Supported by resources from a generous endowment gift from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, the School is poised to make a substantial advance toward expanding its research efforts. New faculty positions will be created in the coming years to promote existing and emerging areas of strength. The School is committed to achieving higher levels of excellence, and seeks faculty candidates who desire to share in this vision.

The four engineering departments conduct interdisciplinary research in a variety of areas, involving both graduate and undergraduate students. Based on our current strengths, we seek to build excellence in the following areas:
Biomolecular Engineering
Cold Regions Engineering
Computer Engineering Control, Communications,
  and Signal Processing
Environmental Engineering
Fluid and Solid Mechanics
Infrastructure Engineering and Materials
Materials Synthesis, Processing,
  and Characterization
Microelectronics
Nanotechnology
Power and Energy
Rehabilitation Engineering

Faculty members in the School of Engineering participate actively in research programs associated with Clarkson’s internationally renowned Center for Advanced Materials Processing, Center for Air Resources Engineering and Science, Center for the Environment, and the Center for Quantum Devices Technology, taking advantage of the resources and synergy provided by these centers. The successful candidates will be expected to build on our current strengths and move the research effort to higher levels of excellence, while leading the School into new research areas.
The School of Engineering is fully committed to supporting new faculty members in their efforts to establish a strong research program. This includes funds for equipment and the assignment of graduate teaching assistants supported by the departments. Teaching loads are moderate with sufficient flexibility to permit development of active research programs. The School of Engineering is housed in a modern building equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including extensive computing resources.
Founded in 1896, Clarkson is a Carnegie Doctoral/Research – Intensive institution. It is located in a pleasant college town of 10,000, near mountain and river recreation areas, and within driving distance of the Canadian cities of Ottawa and Montreal. Clarkson is a private coeducational university with approximately 2,800 undergraduate students and 350 graduate students enrolled in programs in science, engineering, management and liberal arts. Clarkson’s vision is to promote academic excellence and to be among the best engineering programs in the United States. Our students regularly receive Goldwater Scholarships and place highly in national team competitions. The signature characteristics of the University are its commitment to students, the high stature given to research, innovative curricula, disciplined management, and the friendliness of its community.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.

Hi, The Terri Schiavo case gives everyone some thing to think about,
but in all the media coverage, I have not heard of a speech or Aug
comm eval. Does anyone have any knowledge of this being done? The
April 4 Newsweek mentions physical, occupational, and recreational
therapies by name. From what I can gather she never was a candidate,
but a proper eval would have given everyone more information about
her condition. If I am ever in a condition near this I would want a
good Aug comm eval done on me. So much for my 2 cents.

Mark...

I think an aug comm eval is moot.  The court appointed neurologist who examined Terri said her EEG was FLAT! (His emphasis).  From what I can see...the people who actually examined her are the ones that said she's in a PVS.  Most of those folks who say otherwise...never examined her.

I saw an interview on CNN of one of her nurses...who said she thought if Terri had a few hours of therapy...she was sure she would be walking!

Jerry,

Yes an active EEG is a prerequisite for aug comm as well as reasonably consistent yes/no, I just thought for some people it would be a good tool for assesment.

Gotta agree with Jerry. If her EEG is flat, there's not much sense in an aug
com evaluation. Sometimes, when you love someone, you see and hear what you want
and hope to see and hear. I suspect that's happening in this case, and I did the
same thing in the case of my own grandfather's massive stroke. But thank
heavens, I was not the one who had to make the hard decisions in his case. In
retrospect, I know my decision would have been the wrong one.

Robert,

Thanks for alerting me about the juding opportunity.

Trudy and I did not know that going to Atlanta was a requirement for
judging. We are looking at finances and total costs for full
attendance approach $1200. With the honorarium, that leaves $700 in
expenses. I have not even grossed that much from AT this year, and
have emailed Glenn about the situation, and the possibility of bowing
out.

I guess we are skeptical about how worthwhile the conference will be,
with the lack of jobs in the area, and the sour taste from years ago
when we exhibited and people came up to examine the Turtle Trainer,
saying they were looking it over so it could be copied.

At this instant, I am not certain how this will play out, but I
wanted to keep you up to date. Its been interesting reading the
submissions, I'm about 1/3 through.

Thanks

Mark
